Lesson Focus

  • Helping younger kids understand how to efficiently use their strength to clear with the correct movements

Warm Up (10 mins)

  • Run 3 laps around the gym
  • High Knees
  • Butt Kickers
  • Side Shuffles
  • Karaoke
  • Lunges
  • Ankle and wrist twises
  • Sprints

Notes

You can change some of the exercises if you think it is better for the class

Break (5 mins)

Students that don’t need the break can start rallying

Practicing Scissor Jump (20 mins)

  • Coaches to demonstrate to students what is scissor jump and explain the drill
  • Have all students line up against the net with a shuttle in hand
  • Students throwing the shuttle forward with scissor jump
  • Move forward after landing to pick up their shuttle
  • Once coaches happy with students movement, add two chasse steps backward before the scissor jump
  • Concentrate on the wright of the racket leg, kick through, land on the non-racket foot and movement forward

Notes

  • Coaches to watch the student movements and correct them accordingly
  • Coaches can modify the the drill to make it competitive and fun

Technique Practice – Forehand Clear (20 mins)

  • Group of 3-4
  • Students take turn to be hitter. Coaches will be the feeder
  • Hitter and feeder on the same side of the court.
  • Other students pick up shuttles and make them in a row
  • Feeder stands beside the hitter and throw the shuttle high for hitter to execute a clear
  • 10 shuttles then switch

Notes

  • The contact point should be high and in front of the hitter
  • Coaches be aware of left handed students and move your feeding position for safety purpose

Forehand Clear Rally (10 mins)

  • Group of two with one shuttle
  • Pairs to start rally with forehand serve yo the rear court
  • Continue rally with forehand clear to the rear court
  • Switch up partners after 10 clear
  • Coaches can join in the drills

Notes

  • The objective is to hit the shuttles high and longest possible
  • Emphasize on sight on position, throwing actions and high point of interception (Contact point)
  • Coaches can walk around and help students to execute the correct movement for clear

Cleanup and Break (5 mins)

Games – King’s Court (15 mins)

  • Half-court singles games
  • 3 mins games each round. At the end of 3 minutes, the students with more points moves up toward the King’s court while the other students moves down
  • The loser of each round does 10 push-ups (Coach to decide if this is necessary)

Notes

  • Put the weaker players near the King’s court, and put the stronger players near the bottom
  • Coaches keep track of time and make sure the losers do their push-ups
  • A coach can play as “King” if there’s an off number of students
  • If there are too many players, whoever wins at King’s court can take a break for one round

Cool Down Stretch (5 mins)

  • Calves
  • Quads
  • Glutes
  • Hamstrings
  • Groin

Notes

  • Review what technique learned today
  • Talk about what went well today and what didn’t
  • Ask for the student’s feedback on the drills and the games
  • Socialize with them
