Group:

  • Beginner
  • 12 students – 8 to 14 years old
  • Understand how to clear, drop, smash, net shots, lift but need lot of refining of techniques
    Develop basic game knowledge

Lesson Focus:

  • Refine basic shots while practicing footwork
  • Games – apply clear skills into game scenarios

Warm Up (10 mins)

  • Running forward to one wall and back to the starting point 3x
    • Side shuffle 
    • Crossovers
    • High knees/butt kicks
  • Games – apply clear skills into game scenarios
    • Students split into team of two and each team take a half court
    • Place 4 shuttles on the center line
    • Students try to keep their court free of shuttles by throwing shuttles over to the opposite court
    • Throwing should replicate a clear shadow swing
    • Each game take 30 seconds
    • Switch up opponents after each game (like King’s court)
    • Coach to call time

Notes:

  • Warmup without rackets
  • Increases heart rate and blood flow

Footwork – Clear on a half court(15 mins)

  • Every student is on a half court (4 students per court)
  • Students line up 10 shuttles on the service line
  • Begin by picking up a shuttle then shuffling to the baseline
  • Shadow swing and scissor kick while throwing the bird forward, imitating a clear
  • Running forward to pick up another shuttle and repeat
  • Set of 3 – 5 depending on students progress

Notes:

  • Students must do scissor kick when shadow clear at the rear court
  • Proper footwork and shadow swing is a big focus of this drill
  • Coaches should check the footwork, drip, and swing of students

Break (5 mins)

Forehand Clear (Stationary) – Technique practice (15 mins)

  • Group of two – one feeder and one worker
  • Feeder standing on the hitter dominant arm side and throw shuttle high for hitter to do clear shot
  • Worker standing side way with non-racket foot at the front and raise racket in ready position
  • Worker target to clear the shuttle to land between the last two lines of the opposite court
  • 15 shuttles then switch role
  • 3 sets each

Notes:

  • Feeder only throw shuttle when worker is in ready position
  • Feeder must throw high for worker to do the clear shot
  • Worker take note of contact power must be high and in front of them, not on top of their head
  • Coach to help feed students if they cannot feed correctly
  • Add on scissor kick if students can clear correctly
  • Coaches to decide continue on this drill for another 15 mins for students still not yet master the clear stroke

Forehand/Overhead Clear + Full court – Technique practice (15 mins)

  • Group of 3 – 4 on one court
  • One worker, two feeders and one picking up shuttles
  • Worker places 4 shuttles on each side of the service line
  • Two feeders stand on the opposite court and take turn to serve high for worker to do clear shot
  • Worker approach to the shuttle with proper footwork and do clear shot
  • After clear shot, worker must move straight and knock down a bird, then move to the diagonal corner to clear
  • Each feeder take 8 shuttle.

Notes:

  • Feeders must give adequate time for worker to recover and back to center
  • Feeders must serve straight and high and aim between the two lines in the backcourt
  • Worker must split step in the center (directional split step if possible)
  • Worker must scissor kick in the backcourt and clear the shuttle to the last two lines on the opposite court
  • Worker must keep their racket up above their should level
  • Coaches should check the feeding, and the technique and footwork of the worker

Cleanup & Break (5 mins)

  • Coaches check in on games and provide tips

Cool Down Stretches (5 mins)

  • Calves
  • Quads
  • Glutes
  • Hamstrings
  • Groin
