Focus:

  • Continue to help kids to understand and improve their badminton stroke.
  • Last 2 classes of 2022 season, we will review the backhand lift and forehand lift.
  • Introduce foot work drills.

Warm Up (10 mins)

Run 3 laps back and forth from one wall to the other wall.

  • Side Shuffles and Jump 1x
  • Lunges 1x
  • High Knees 1x
  • Butt Kickers 1x
  • Karaoke 1x

Notes:

  • Warm up without rackets
  • Increases heart rate and blood flow

Water Break (5 mins)

Footwork: Front Court and Return (15 mins)

  • Group of 2. Take turns to do front court footwork.
  • Start from the center of the court. Start with split step and lunge forward to forehand, move back to center. Then split the step again at center and move forward to the backhand side.
  • Lunge should use the racket leg. Make sure student’s foot point to the direction they are going and the heel should land on the floor first.
  • Each student does 2 sets of 10 times.

Notes:

  • Lunge should finish with the racket leg, land with heel first and the foot pointing to the direction of they are heading to.
  • When lunge, body should not move beyond the knee.

Backhand lift – Revision (15 mins)

  • Two to three students on half court.
  • Coaches to feed the student for backhand lift.  
  • Students waiting for their turn can and pick up shuttles.
  • Students start at the centre of the court, follow the footwork practiced earlier to the backhand front court.
  • Students swing the racket upwards with a backhand grip. Students need to hit the shuttle high and far.
  • 12 shuttles, 3 sets per student

Notes:

  • Coaches to demo the drill
  • Make sure students have correct backhand grip.
  • Contact point should be around knee level.
  • Coaches to adjust drill for left handed students.
  • Coaches can simplify the drill with only stationary swing if necessary

Forehand lift – Revision (15 mins)

  • Two to three students on half court
  • Coaches to feed the students for forehand lift.
  • Students waiting for their turn can and pick up shuttles.
  • Students start at the center of court, follow the footwork practiced earlier to the forehand front court side
  • Students swing the racket upwards, once it is about to hit the shuttle, flick your wrist (pronate forearm) to generate power.

  • Coaches to demo the drill
  • Make sure students have the correct forehand grip.
  • Contact point should be around knee level.
  • Coaches to adjust drill for left handed students.
  • Coaches can simplify the drill with only stationary swing if necessary

Games – double or single (25 mins) 

  • Games up to 21
  • Coaches assign pairings and games
  • Coaches teach them game rules for doubles or singles.
  • Prepare them for the June tournament. 

Cool Down Stretch and Review (5 mins)

  • Calves
  • Quads
  • Glutes
  • Hamstrings
  • Groin

Notes:

  • Review what technique learned today
  • Talk about what went well today and what didn’t
  • Ask for the student’s feedback on the drills and the games
  • Socialize with them.
