Warm Up (10 min)
- Play Tag
- Split students into group of 5-6 on a half court
- One student be “IT” and try to catch the rest by touching them.
- Students get touched will leave the court
- Everyone must walk along the lines on the half court AFTER the service line. No running
- Play for two mins then 30 seconds break
- Play for 3 rounds
Notes:
- Warmup without rackets
- Increases heart rate and blood flow
2 min break
Footwork Drill: 4 corners movement (15 min)
- Coaches to demonstrate the correct footwork moving to 4 corners and return to the base
- Movement should include:
- Begin with directional split step, with body position heading to the direction of the corner
- Sideway shuffle/Chasses step to the corner
- When arrive, execute a shadow net shot (front corners) and shadow clear shot (rear corners)
- Recover body balance
- Move back to the center court with chasse step, arrive with a split step
- Students work in group of two on a half court, take turn to practice
- Each student does 3 rounds (right front corner – right rear corner – left rear corner – left front corner), repeat for 5 sets
Notes:
- Each coach look after one court, observe students follow the instruction
- Stop the students and correct them if notice them not doing it right or missing steps
2 min break
Technique: Drop, Net, Lift (15 min)
- Group of 2
- Student A starts the drill with high serve
- Student B moves back to execute drop shot
- Student A moves up to execute net shot
- Student B moves up to execute lift
- Each group take a half court
- High serve and lift target to land between the last two lines on the rear court
- Use proper footwork to move forward and backward. i.e: Chasses step, or cross over but no running
- Time drill for 10 mins
Notes:
- This drill combined drop shot, net and lift techniques learned in the past.
- Coaches pay attention to all students executing the shot especially on grip, high serve, drop shot and net shot
- Coaches can alter the drill to make it more simple (isolate the skills) for students unable to perform the drill
Technique: Double Positioning (15 min)
- Group of 4 on one court
- Coaches to explain the position of players in double games
- Basic rules:
- When your partner moving to the back court, you have to move to T line to cover the front
- When your partner did a offensive shot (smash or drop), you stay at the front to cover the front
- When your partner did a defensive shot (clear), you pick a closer side and move to the center to defend the half court
- When your partner moving to the front to execute a net shot, you have to move back to cover the rear court.
- When either one player did a lift, both players must move to the center of each side to cover their own side of the court
- Start the drill with short server as in a games simulation. 4 students keep the rallying going as long as possible. Every players must be alert on where their partner position and do the right follow up action
- Only Clear, Drop, Lift and Net shots allowed in this drill.
- Student to keep score. Losing pairs do 5 burpees
- 5 mins times drill. Switch the students around so they get to adapt to different style of play
Notes:
- Games simulation drill to get students be familiar with the follow up actions after a shot
- Coaches to watch them practice and stop the drill and give instruction if required
