Lesson Focus:

  • Proper movement to the rear court
  • Acquiring correct clear stroke
  • Games – apply skills into game

Warm-Up (10 min)

  • Running forward to one wall and backwards back to the starting point 3x
  • Karaoke 2x
  • Sideway shuffles 2x, going forward, come back backward
  • Shuffle, Shuffle, Jump 1x
  • High knees; butt kickers 1x
  • Lunges with side twist 1x

Notes

  • Warmup without rackets
  • Increases heart rate and blood flow

2 min break

Footwork Drill: Moving to rear court to front court with racquet (15 min)

  • Each student take a half court, stand on the mid court
  • On coach signal, students start with a split step and turn body side way
  • Then, move back with chasse steps to the rear court
  • Stop when arrive in between the last two lines, and execute a shadow clear shot with scissor kick
  • After that, move forward with running step
  • When arrive at the service line, do a lunge and execute a shadow net shot
  • Recover body balance and move back to the mid court
  • Repeat for 3 round for 7 sets

Notes:

  • Each coach look after one court and watch over 4 students
  • Pay attention to student overall movements
  • Shadow clear stroke must swing high and forward, not sideway
  • When approach for net shot, lunge with racquet foot with toe pointing to the direction of the shuttle. Toe pointing sideway is likely cause foot injury
  • Net shot should take around the white tap (or around chest level)
  • Coaches to interrupt and correct the students with incorrect movement

2 min break

Forehand High Serve (20 min)

  • Two pairs on a court
  • Partners are on diagonally opposite sides of the net
  • One partner serves and the other collects birdies
  • The partner with the birdies high serves 20 shots
  • The other partner picks up 20 birdies 
  • The other partner high serves 20 shots and the first partner collects them
  • 20 shots then switch (Server and collector switch roles)
  • Keep rotating until coaches call time

Notes:

  • Server should serve high and aim between the two lines in the backcourt
  • When contacting the birdie, the server should accelerate the racket head by pronating forearm and straightening wrist to achieve more power
  • Server should also transfer their weight from back foot to front foot to achieve more power
  • Racket and birdie must start in an elevated position to conceal the motive of the serve
  • Check the technique and stance of the servers

Technique Drill: Serve and Forehand Clear (20 min)

  • Student in group of two
  • One feeder and one hitter
  • Feeder serves high diagonal to hitter
  • Hitter moves back and execute forehand clear (straight)
  • Hitter focus on: high contact point, swing racket high (not forward or sideway), follow through after hit
  • Feeder focus on: sending shuttle high and far back, land between the last two lines

Notes:

  • 20 birdies, switch role after. 3 sets per students
  • Hitter should raise their racket before move back.
  • Feeder wait for hitter return to base before serve again
  • Any student cannot serve high, move to one court to continue high serve practice
  • Coach to help serve if many students cannot perform high serve.
  • Check all students forehand grip

Games – King of court (25 mins)

  • Modified half court singles with front court before the service line is out
  • King’s court is a full court game (if 10 students or lesser)
  • After every 3 minutes, the person with more points moves up towards the King’s court while the other person moves down
  • All students must keep their scores
  • Play for 8 rounds

Cool Down/Stretching (5 min)

  • Calves
  • Quads
  • Glutes
  • Hamstrings
  • Groin
