Lesson Focus:
- Refine basic shots while practicing footwork
- Games – apply skills into game scenarios
Warm Up (10 mins)
- Running forward to one wall and backwards back to the starting point 3x
- High knees; butt kickers 1x
- Side shuffles 2x
- Karaoke 2x
- Lunges with side twist 2x
- Ankle and wrist twists 2x
- Sprints 3x
Notes:
- Warmup without rackets
- Increases heart rate and blood flow
Footwork – Forecourt and Rearcourt 4 Points Footwork (15 mins)
- Students are paired up and each pair uses one side of a court
- One student is the worker while the other is the pointer
- Pointer points to a corner and the worker moves to that corner using proper footwork and shadow swings
- Worker returns back to the center using proper footwork and waits for the pointer to point again
- 20 corners x 4 sets
Notes:
- Workers must start at the center of the court and return before and after every corner
- Workers must split step at the center of the court
- Pointers must wait for the workers to return back to the center before pointing at the next corner
- Coaches should check the footwork, grip, and swing of students
- Coaches should ensure the pointers are not pointing too soon or too late
Break (5 mins)
Forehand Drive- Technique practice (15 mins)
Two pairs on each court
- Feeder and worker are on same side of a half court
- Feeder holds a row of 20 birdies
- Feeder uses an underhand throw to feed the worker
- Worker starts off with a basic grip and with the racket in front of their body
- Worker then raises their arm while bending their elbow and wrist back and rotates their upper and lower arm outwards
- When contacting the birdie, the worker straightens their elbow and wrist while rotating their upper and lower arm inwards
- After contacting the birdie, the worker follows through by relaxing their arm and letting the racket momentum rotate their arm inwards
- 20 birdies then switch roles
Notes:
- Feeders should stand off the court on the side
- Feeders must feed high tosses in front of the racket of the worker
- Feeders should feed at a fair rate
- Workers must adjust their position to hit a proper drive shot
- Workers should strike the birdie at the side of the body
- Workers must maintain ready position before and after every shot
- Coaches should check the feeding of the feeders, and the technique and positioning of the workers
Clear and Drop – Technique practice (15 mins)
Two pairs on a half-court
- Worker and feeder are on opposite sides of the half-court
- Feeder serves high serves to the back of the court
- Worker starts at the center and split steps when the feeder serves
- Worker uses chasse step to move backcourt to the birdie
- Worker swings and clears the birdie, then returns back to the center
- Feeder returns the birdie with a clear shot
- Worker uses chasse step to move backcourt to the birdie
- Worker swings and drop shots the birdie, then returns back to the center
- Feeder returns the birdie with a clear shot
- Switch roles every 2 minutes
Notes:
- Worker must start and return back to the center before and after every shot
- Worker must split center in the center before each shot
- Worker must scissor – kick in the back court
- Worker should aim to clear between the back two lines, and drop near the service line
- Check the technique and footwork of the worker, and the feeder’s feeding
Cleanup and Break (5 mins)
Games – Doubles (25 mins)
- Games up to 21
- Coaches assign pairings and games
- Coaches provide coaching in between rallies on strategy as well as technical corrections
- Losing pair does 10 burpees
Notes:
- Make sure teams are balanced and fair
- Provide a refresher on how to play doubles if players forget
- Coaches may play if there is an odd number of players
